"Song For Krista" is my second pick off Susan Sleepwalking, the 1985 release from Midwestern ambient/goth dream pop outfit The Arms Of Someone New. Which is probably two too many from an album I'm convinced nobody else on the planet has ever heard (judging from the blank stares I get whenever I mention it). But damn, I do love this album, and this track is another perfect example of the sort of quiet, ethereal electronica to which I've repeatedly turned when faced with insomnia over the intervening four decades. Just a primitive drum machine, some simple synth chords, and casually hushed vocals (plus some ghostly choirs and spooky backwards reverb), yet it's absolutely haunted my dreams since first listen, in the very best way.
Plus, it's a great excuse to point out the record's massive deluxe-edition reissue last year (followed this year by the deluxe-edition reissue of the band's 1986 follow-up, a little less ethereal but still really cool). Check them out on Bandcamp!
