2000 Great Songs #1442: 1234

"1234," off Canadian singer (and sometimes Broken Social Scene member) Feist's 2004 breakthrough LP Let It Die, wouldn't normally be the sort of thing I pay much attention to. It's one of those charming, eminently likable pop songs that seems almost deliberately constructed to end up in an Apple commercial, piped over the Starbucks speakers, or played over the credits of the latest young-adult-oriented series streaming on Netflix--all perfectly fine things, but maybe a little free of the edge I like to hear in my music.

But you know what? Even if mixtapes are obsolete, I'll always have fondness for a song that immediately has you thinking how nice it would be throw on a mixtape for a friend and know they'd be perfectly happy to hear it. Or, these days, to include on the playlists I'm always tinkering with to play when company comes over.
