2000 Great Songs #1264: Keep It Up
I've always been lukewarm on Soul Asylum (tip-off: only one song of theirs on the list prior to today, and it's the rare song which isn't helmed by frontman Dave Pirner). Still, 1992's Grave Dancers Union was pretty omnipresent at the time, their big breakthrough from college radio to mainstream alternative rock. It was front-loaded with the three big singles, but I was a sucker for the clean-up track. "Keep It Up" didn't get the splashy MTV video or the greatest hits-package inclusion, but I've always loved it. And, sure, it's a basic bar band rocker, but as a modest little rave-up anthem, it's pretty damn effective, one of those songs I used to crank up to start the morning commute or a night out. Or at least I did back in 1992. I haven't spent much time with the record since then, but still love this tune.Live 2020:NEW! You can now see the entire Top 2000 to date in a sortable database!
