2000 Great Songs #1261: Jenny Ondioline

Stereolab's 1993 single "Jenny Ondioline" falls somewhere between droning electronic Krautrock and droning distorted shoegaze. Which would make for an awful lot of droning, if not for the catchy melody beneath the surface. When Laetitia Sadier's deadpan in the verses cuts loose into an embracing chorus, it feels warmly cathartic (though a peek at the lyrics may undercut that perky taste of honey).

While the single is Stereolab at their poppiest, the 18-minute monster that appeared on the LP Transient Random-Noise Bursts... shows the more adventurous side of the band, a multi-part suite that veers a few times into overdriven noise a la the Velvets' "Sister Ray" yet still (just barely) hanging on to that shimmering electro-pop thread.
