2000 Great Songs #1276: Wicked Gil
It seems maybe a little bewildering 20 years after the fact, but in 2006 Band of Horses' eponymous debut, Everything All The Time, felt like a big deal. They struck me as not far afield from My Morning Jacket, placing boomy, almost arena-ready classic rock bombast into an Americana/indie context, but with a slightly more alt.rock-radio-friendly sheen--kinda esoteric freak-folk built for a broader audience. Can't say I feel as close to them today, though I've kept up with their subsequent releases and still enjoy a lot of their music.
The debut's "Wicked Gil" particularly let loose with that room-filling sound, full of drama and portent, soaring vocal acrobatics and John Bonham-styled drum muscle, but rounded out with some warm jangle. Cool track that thrives with some volume.
