My Top 2000 Songs #1155: Draw(ing) To A (W)hole

By the time I discovered legendary New Zealand post-punk pioneers The Clean in the late 90s (by way of a friend's introduction to fellow New Zealanders The Bats, whose frontman had been the Clean's bassist), they had already seemingly broken up. So, having become obsessed with their collection of early singles/EPs, 1996's insanely great Compilation, it was exciting when they reformed and released 1990's Vehicle. While maybe not as revelatory as their initial work, there was lots of skewed but jangly indie pop throughout the album.

Opening track and lead-off single "Draw(ing) To A (W)hole," with those odd parentheticals, didn't leave my stereo for weeks. Full of chords that both ring and slash, and David Kilgour's charmingly not-quite-hitting-the-right-notes vocal delivery, it made for an off-kilter yet still catchy track worthy of their legend.
