My Top 2000 Songs #1151: Brimful Of Asha

While Cornershop have some other fine music (largely unknown here in the States), blending Britpop with the band's Indian music roots, "Brimful Of Asha" still plays like one of those perfect little one-hit-wonders (in the best way). Just a few notes into the track and you can instantly place it in time, as evocative a time capsule of 90s alternative radio as, say, "Tubthumping" or "Loser" or "Steal My Sunshine." (Yeah, I've got a playlist for that!)

Apparently the bouncier Fatboy Slim remix got most the attention on the other side of the pond, and while its double-speed energy may be great if you're out dancing, I'm loyal to the more relaxed original found on 1997's When I Was Born For The 7th Time. It's a basic three-chord pop song, repetitive to a fault, and its lyrical references (to Bollywood films and music) are entirely lost on me, yet it's so ridiculously infectious that its five minute running time almost feels too short.
