My Top 2000 Songs #1145: Strange Glue
Another one of the infrequent inclusions on the list from the past decade, "Strange Glue," from 2015's Searching For The Supertruth, is the work of Oxford, UK band Dreaming Spires. Led by two brothers, the band offer gentle indie pop music; they haven't gotten much traction here in the US, but somehow this song got on my radar screen and totally blew me away. I could make a cowbell joke--so much cowbell here!--but it's all about an incisive little hook and an endearing sweetness, an outpouring of lyrics that, I dunno, I just find utterly magnetic. I've never sat down and given them a close analysis, but somehow every time I play this song I just get this overwhelming feeling of warmth, the refrain's "strange glue holding us together" serving as a message that's all too necessary today.
And in a kinda spooky coincidence--I swear, this song was slotted here for some time--after a decade of silence, the band released it's follow-up just this week. Which feels like the sort of magical fortuity I'd expect from this track.
