My Top 2000 Songs #1149: The Delaney
We've had a few songs on the list that, despite their greatness, were inexplicably relegated to b-sides (I mentioned one just a few days ago). But kudos to The Libertines for demoting two of my favorite songs to the flipside. While the single "I Get Along," off the band's fantastic (and in the States underappreciated) 2002 debut Up The Bracket, is pretty great, I actually prefer "Skag & Bone Man" and "The Delaney." Both of them, in addition to being wickedly catchy punk-flavored Britpop era gems, have the sound of a band of British hooligans, drunkenly shouting at the pub, about to collapse any second (which eventually, unsurprisingly, came to pass). "The Delaney" is just a shambling, joyful mess, wholly foreign to these American ears but utterly inviting.Live 2010:Live 2015:Cool alternate version:Acoustic cover version:Some woman in her bedroom with an acoustic guitar:
