2000 Great Songs #1407: The Ghost In You
As noted previously, the Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way" was one the most definitive songs of my high school years, high atop the shortlist of new wave-era songs that opened me to music beyond the top 40 hits and classic rock chestnuts I'd been absorbing up until that point. "The Ghost In You," off 1984's Mirror Moves, doesn't have quite the same emotional connotations for me--it's just a truly great pop song, the band at their most accessible. Richard Butler keeps his sandpaper-throated-Bowie rasp in check, making this the approachable radio-ready song the band needed. Or at least the song that seemed a constant college party staple back in the day.Alternate video:Live 1984:Robyn Hitchcock acoustic cover:Breathtaking live version from Hitchcock & Emma Swift:Counting Crows cover:Duncan Sheik cover:See the entire Top 2000 to date in a sortable database!
