2000 Great Songs #1384: Always Saturday
Georgia's Guadalcanal Diary were among the Southern jangle pop acts that dominated the 80s college radio scene, gliding in alongside R.E.M., the Connells, Love Tractor, the Reivers, etc. They never got the mainstream traction they deserved, but their fourth and final LP, 1989's Flip-Flop, at least gave it a good shot, with "Always Saturday" about as radio-friendly as they ever got. It's a charming little pop song with a sing-along chorus, a total earworm I can still sing from memory; it may have snuck its way onto 120 Minutes, but remains one of those shoulda-been hits relegated to if you know, you know territory.Album version, better audio:Live 1989:See the entire Top 2000 to date in a sortable database!
