Newish Releases: The Young Sinclairs

Virginia-based Young Sinclairs have been quietly releasing gently jangly retro-psychedelia for a number of years, though they took some time off after their last one, 2019's Out Of The Box. That record was fairly varied, mostly in a psychedelic style but ranging from pop to garage to electro-trance. They've finally returned with Cycles Turning, and this one is a little more firmly resting in cosmic Americana jangle pop. (It slots in quite nicely alongside another recent release I've chatted up from The Hanging Stars.)

The clearest touchstones here are Paisley Underground bands like Rain Parade and The Things. There's a lot of Byrdsy treble in the guitars, with some intermittent Revolver-reminiscent buzz ("Own Two Feet"), while the opening title track starts off sounding like a long-lost early R.E.M. tune. A few tunes veer into rougher garage rock ("Deceit Again," "Tunnel Walls"), but mostly this is a record that makes you want to kick back and space out, a little lo-fi and free of any bells & whistles but some lovely, dreamy escapism. Check it out at Bandcamp.
