2000 Great Songs #1380: Smack

"Smack" is a punchy number off Dutch indie band Bettie Serveert's fifth studio LP, 2003's Log 22. By then, the band weren't getting nearly as much attention from the alt.rock crowd, which is a shame, as it's a damn solid record. They'd shaved off the grungy Crazy Horse distortion from the first few records and mixed up their sound a bit, but the track still electrifies, with its stop-start rhythms and, as always, Carol Van Dijk's arresting vocals.
