2000 Great Songs #1387: Alec Eiffel
The fourth and final LP from the Pixies' original run, 1991's Trompe le Monde, tends to be underrated. I personally think it includes some of their best songs; though after the previously-referenced "Planet Of Sound," I struggle to pick a second-favorite from a number of worthy contenders. I'm going with "Alec Eiffel," but might just have to change my mind tomorrow. But it's a fun one, punchy and high-velocity and rather brittle, like it might just snap off at any moment; but about halfway through, the jagged guitar riffs subside and there's this whole weird-sounding synth bit over that wonderful driving beat. It's strange and exciting and makes it more than just a bracing post-punk rocker. (Plus, all-time video, the band playing in the wake of a jet engine, so cool!)Live 2024:Arcade Fire live cover, 2014:Get Up Kids cover:An April March cover:See the entire Top 2000 to date in a sortable database!
