2000 Great Songs #1339: Kismet Kill
Midwestern singer-songwriter Haley Bonar released a handful of below-the-radar indie albums in the 00's and 10's (and has more recently been recording as simply Haley), stylistically varied work that ranged from fizzy alt.rock to smoky dream pop and Americana--think an alternate universe Jenny Lewis/Rilo Kiley. I somehow stumbled across 2016's Impossible Dream, and was instantly captivated by "Kismet Kill." It's one of her more upbeat numbers, dense and percolating, a bath of shoegaze buzz and film noir atmospherics, with a chorus that jabbed into my brain and has been lingering there for the past decade. One of those things where you hear the melody and can't figure out why nobody has come up with it before. Just an incredibly cool song.Live in the studio 2016:See the entire Top 2000 to date in a sortable database!
