2000 Great Songs #1332: I Trust

The final incarnation of the Byrds (excluding the short-lived reunion of the early line-up) produced a wealth of great music (to say nothing of their prowess as a live act), even if few of the latter-day songs are as well-known as their run of early singles. "I Trust," off 1971's good-but-spotty Byrdmaniax, has long been a personal favorite. A gentle, earnest ballad, it finds Roger McGuinn working in a familiar country-rock space but infused with some glorious gospel. There's a sense of real despair within the song, swept aside by a somewhat convincing proclamation that everything's gonna work out alright. One of those tunes that gives me a little hope in tough times.
