2000 Great Songs #1321: Open The Door

Georgia alt.rockers Magnapop had a few albums in the 90s that fit in comfortably alongside bands like the Breeders and Hole, though they never got quite the same critical or commercial attention. Eminently buoyant singer Linda Hopper had previously played in experimental post-punk act Oh-Ok (alongside Michael Stipe's sister Linda), but Magnapop moved in a more pop-oriented direction. They had their MTV moment with the catchy "Open The Door," from 1996's Rubbing Doesn't Help--the third and final LP of their original run, though they've released music intermittently since then. It's a bit more restrained than much of their work, a Pixies-like bass hook cutting loose into some jangly power pop. It's not the most novel of songs and would've been fine at two minutes--but 30 years later, I still hear Hopper's incantation to "Open the door!" in my head when I'm waiting for someone to answer the doorbell. So there's that.
