2000 Great Songs #1316: Still Wishing To Course
On their third LP in barely 18 months, Camper Van Beethoven took a big leap forward, the eponymous 1986 record stretching musically beyond the post-punk goofiness (and odd world music instrumentals) of the first pair. It was an eclectic blend of lo-fi college radio jangle pop (they'd get a big sonic boost on their major label debut which followed), psychedelia, Americana, and all manner of ambitious strangeness. "Still Wishing To Course" somehow managed to jam all of that together into a single package, a catchy pop tune full of jangle, lyrics flying by in a blur, while still leaving enough space to head off into a bit of a psychedelic jam at the end. It's got the same causal dorkiness of the rest of their mid-80s work, yet sounds like they also want to flex their chops a bit.See the entire Top 2000 to date in a sortable database!
