2000 Great Songs #1213: Options
British indie rockers Gomez have always been impossible to pigeonhole, a colorful blend of Americana, jam band psychedelia, and offbeat indie rock... but "Options," the lead-off track from 2011's Whatever's On Your Mind (sadly, the last we heard from the band), is just straight-up pop music. Ok, still a bit tricked out, but at heart an incredibly infectious, perky & caffeinated pop tune. Mostly I just love it for being so... optimistic? Sure, there are some signs of cynicism behind the lyrics, but ultimately it's always hit me as a terrific feel-good song. "All the things you'll see, and the places you'll go..." Almost like Dr. Seuss turned into indie pop.Live on Letterman 2011:Acoustic live:
