2000 Great Songs #1218: Under The Surface

It's pretty cool how 90s indie rock seems to be having a moment of sorts. Lots of great new bands I love mining their vibe (i.e. Momma); I saw a fabulous Yo La Tengo/Luna double-bill a couple weeks ago, and just picked up tickets for Pavement this summer (see you in Oakland). Now if only we could get ourselves a Bettie Serveert renaissance! The Dutch band's 1992 debut Palomine was a huge part of my life at the time and still holds up great (which isn't to diminish some of the great and largely underrated work which followed).

"Under The Surface" (my second pick from the LP) feels like a post-grunge power ballad, emotionally rich and sweetly melodic yet surrounded by a wall of heavy Crazy Horse distortion. One of the tracks from that era which is always swirling around somewhere in the back of my head.
