Seems like just a couple days ago we were talking about obscure-ish 80s college radio jangle pop...
Hoboken, NJ act The Bongos rarely get the credit they deserve as forerunners of the genre. They started releasing music in 1980, placing them alongside the Feelies and the dB's in the early East Coast post-punk scene, and their terrific 1982 long-player debut, Drums Along The Hudson, preceded R.E.M.'s Murmur by a solid year. Lots of great, quirky music on the album (and 1985's worthy follow-up, Beat Hotel), though I'm partial to "The Bulrushes," a little less edgy than most of the tracks--just a catchy, straightforward, truly essential jangle pop classic. If you love mid-80s college radio, this is one of those tracks you end up throwing onto mixtapes to help explain exactly what you mean...
