My Top 1000 Songs #881: Your Kind Turn Me All Around

[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]

One of those random things in my music collection that I'm convinced few people have ever heard, but holds a special place in my heart.

Polyphemus were a short-lived Southern California indie duo dating back to the mid-90s. I think it was my brother who turned me on to their 1993 debut, Scrapbook Of Madness, a fascinating relic which pairs noisy guitar 90s alt.rock with 60s psychedelia inspired by the Pretty Things and the Small Faces. Notwithstanding the record's complete obscurity--aside from my brother's recommendation, I don't think I ever saw any evidence anyone on the planet was familiar with its existence--there are a number of surprisingly great songs, particularly "Your Kind Turn Me All Around." It's got a claustrophobic home studio vibe, with a boxy fuzzbox guitar juxtaposed against a jangly acoustic guitar, elevated by a gorgeous melody that feels straight off of the Pretties' SF Sorrow LP, trippy and anachronistically out of time, but informed by post-punk sensibilities. It's rather unique and has stuck with me all these years.
