2000 Great Songs #1481: Second Choice
Britain's Any Trouble kicked around on and off for decades, releasing consistently solid records (largely overlooked here in the states) ranging from first-wave skinny-tie power pop to pub rock to blue-eyed soul. It's a bit of a cop-out to compare their 1980 debut, Where Are All The Nice Girls?, with the earlier debuts of Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson (no doubt abetted by singer Clive Gregson both looking & sounding like a mash-up of the two), but being a little late to the party with a readily-identifiable sound doesn't make the record any less great.
Lead-off track "Second Choice" is a fun introduction to the band, ska-tinged new wave with a charming chorus. How this song wasn't a monster hit is just nuts, right?
