2000 Great Songs #1474: The Intro & The Outro

The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (later just Bonzo Dog Band) are one of those distinctly British acts that mostly go over my head, neither their "music hall" theatrical musicality and oddball humor easily translating to American sensibilities. Still, there are a number of their tracks I enjoy, either as goofy novelty songs or legit decent tunes. "The Intro And The Outro," off 1967 debut LP Gorilla, is squarely in the former camp. Totally silly and not something I'm gonna just throw on the stereo when I'm listening to music, I still get a kick out of the occasional spin.

As the title suggests, it's either an intro to, or outro from, a song which is never actually played; instead, you just get 3 minutes of credits, recognizing the musical contributions of myriad real & imagined performers (from Eric Clapton to--ugh, really?--Hitler), playing everything from sousaphone to spoons, over a jazz loop of sorts.

Maybe you had to be there?
