My Top 2000 Songs #1179: Freak Scene
On "Freak Scene," from Dinosaur Jr.'s third LP (1988's Bug), J. Mascis toned down a bit of the post-punk wail and let his classic rock bona fides shine through. While still a far cry from a mainstream-ready radio hit, the track is catchy and toned-down enough to at least make its way onto late-night MTV. Later work showed the band steadily moving into more polished alternative rock territory (without unnecessary concessions to acceptability, and Mascis' Young-like howl and guitar pyrotechnics ensuring some modicum of outsider status), and I was all for it; but this track showed some of the early signs of Mascis pivoting into an exciting yet eminently listenable meshing of indie rock sonic bluster and downright traditional rock & roll.Live in the studio 2011:Lounge music cover from Silver Panda:
