2000 Great Songs #1194: Sympathy Wreath

Bay Area singer-songwriter Barbara Manning's One Perfect Green Blanket will always have a special place in my heart. The record came out in 1991, not long after I moved from Chicago to San Francisco, and the local press gave a nice review to the hometown musician, so I picked it up and enjoyed it immensely. Some sweet, wistful folk-rock tunes, jangly but also a little spooky and dark--plus bonus points for a Bats cover (the wonderful "Smoking Her Wings") at a time I was convinced I was one of the few Americans aware of the New Zealand band.

"Sympathy Wreath" is one of the record's more upbeat tracks, chiming guitars at a relatively quick pace, albeit still thematically bittersweet in line with the rest of the album. Even today, the track carries some serious nostalgic heft, transporting me back to my arrival on the West Coast (where I've stayed ever since).
