My Top 2000 Songs #1174: Rock Star
These days, Hole's 1994 breakthrough Live Through This feels pretty much lost to history; if thought of at all, it's buried amidst the debris of Courtney Love's personal baggage and plagued by questions about Kurt Cobain's role in the album. (Which isn't to say a number of contemporary women-fronted indie bands don't seem heavily influenced by the record). But strip away all of that noise, and it's still a phenomenal album.
The big hits from the LP still sound amazing... though I personally have the most affection for "Rock Star" (a.k.a. "Olympia"), the barn burner which closes out the record. There's that cute little false start. The rise from catchy riff-rocker to all-in fully-committed Courtney screamathon. And one of the great 90s Pacific Northwest scene rips in "we look the same, we talk the same, we even f*ck the same." But the whole record is due for a revival.Live:Kids keeping it real:
