My Top 2000 Songs #1169: Purr
"Purr" may be the most concise, straightforward rock & roll song in the extensive Sonic Youth catalog. Aside from the expected these-are-not-normal-chords tunings, and a few joyously discordant guitar skronks in the relatively brief bridge, it's a rollicking riff-rocker that feels as indebted to, say, Led Zeppelin and Cream as to the band's experimental roots. Add in the comforting layer of studio polish, and the track (another one off 1992's Dirty) sounds custom built for a modern twist on classic rock radio. Of course, it wasn't a single, and even if it were it's hard to see mainstream radio doing much with it, but it's still a great look into an alternate universe where Sonic Youth is a pop band. None of which makes the song any less of a rousing, crank-it-up-til-the-walls-shake indie anthem.Fan video:
