My Top 2000 Songs #1124: Die

Seattle-by-way-of-Tucson 2000s indie band Carissa's Wierd (yes, that's how they spell it) didn't make many waves during their short tenure. If they're known at all, it's likely a result of members Ben Bridwell  and Mat Brooke going on to form Band of Horses after their break-up. But they had a few records full of quiet, moody balladry, mostly acoustic guitars and piano accented with violin, highlighted by the vocal interplay between Brooke and his band co-founder Jenn Champion.

They shine brightest on "Die," found on 2004's swansong I Before E, a live album with a few studio tracks. It's dark and a little spooky, rustic Americana, yet a bit more upbeat and dense than their other work, with Champion's delivery absolutely compelling. The sort of thing you could imagine being cleverly deployed in some low-budget independent film noir and just killing it.
