My Top 2000 Songs #1107: Egyptian Cream
Continuing our little rally of Egyptian-themed songs--hey, they just landed that way, I swear!--we're back with a second cut from my favorite Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians record, 1985's Fegmania. "Egyptian Cream" opens the LP with an artist-defining blend of jangly pop music and lyrical absurdity. Maybe a smidge less radio-ready than the record's closing number, "Heaven," but barely a smidge: The song is so chock full of hooks you can imagine it being a huge hit in a universe with a more twisted sensibility. And the support of the Soft Boys' rhythm section, newly christened the Egyptians on this record, gives the sweet jangle some extra punch.Live:
