My Top 1000 Songs #968: Green Is The Colour
The Pink Floyd wilderness years--between the psychedelic Syd Barrett era and the post-Dark Side mega-selling-concept-album era--could be a mixed bag. There were masterpieces (most of Meddle) and dreck (most of Ummagumma), and a bunch of soundtrack albums from little-known films with a little of each. I have a soft spot for the more pastoral folk rock that showed up during this period. The previously-referenced "Wots...Uh The Deal" is one example, a lovely acoustic ballad that's been a longtime fave.
"Green Is The Colour," off 1969's More soundtrack, is cut from the same cloth. Some gentle acoustic strums, a bit of flute, a hushed David Gilmour vocal--it sounds more like Nick Drake than Pink Floyd. Unlike much of their work, they're not aiming for the... er, moon, and it could just as easily have been a tossed-off trifle by a band still trying to find their voice after the departure of a charismatic leader. But somehow it's one of those songs I still love throwing onto playlists for quiet weekend afternoons.
