My Top 1000 Songs #972: Get Better

[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]

Husband-and-wife duo Mates Of State released a few albums of the sort of post-millennium alternative rock/pop that doesn't typically get my attention unless I happen to overhear it at the gym or it otherwise gets some sort of pop culture saturation. But somehow 2008's Re-Arrange Us got on my radar screen, and I liked it quite a bit, probably skewing too young for me but pretty damn catchy. Opener "Get Better" in particular comes barreling out of the speakers, densely-produced and full of rollicking percussion with baroque touches, Kori Gardner's triumphant delivery dancing from a slow melodramatic build-up to crashing crescendos. It would absolutely be a go-to track for me if I were programming the soundtrack for some youth-oriented 2000s-era tv show and needed something for the big dramatic climax.
