My Top 1000 Songs #969: Fifteen Rounds
I've previously shared my appreciation for the music-nerd sub-genre of bands quietly crafting brief snippets of quirky Guided By Voices-influenced indie pop. Compounding the obscurity factor are Unlikely Friends, a super-group of sorts, some guys from various Pacific Northwest indie acts who teamed up for a few records in the 2010s. Nothing world-changing, just a veritable fistful of fun little tunes that would've been AM Top 40 hits in the sort of alternate universe where I'd much rather be living.
"Fifteen Rounds" opens their second LP, 2018's perky Crooked Numbers (sadly, also their final LP, not counting a collection of covers of other Pacific Northwest bands). And it's a gem, a track I've been humming to myself ever since I first heard it. You will be, too, if you share my love of the deliriously-fun-yet-unfairly-overlooked-off-brand-power-pop genre.
