My Top 1000 Songs #717: Trust
The Pretty Things' 1968 opus S.F. Sorrow is one of the defining documents of late 60s UK psych, though it never got quite the same love (at least in the US) as Sgt. Pepper or Piper At The Gates Of Dawn or even, say, Satanic Majesties Request. But it's loaded with great songs, ranging from acid-drenched mind-benders to straighter, prettier cuts. It's also ostensibly the first "concept album" (beating out the Who's Tommy), though it's narrative is hard to parse, and as such is generally better enjoyed as a unified whole rather than cherry-picking key tracks.
Still, several great songs that work just fine on their own. I find "Trust" deeply affecting, a gorgeous ballad bearing no discernible resemblance to the band's R&B roots from just a few years earlier--layered vocals and melodic piano, some wistful minor chords, and just enough psychedelic touches to place it firmly in that specific moment in time.
