New Releases: Chime School
Now, "jangle pop" is a term I throw around quite loosely in these parts, but if you're looking for a definitive example of what I'm talking about, go check out "The End," the incongruously-titled opening cut on Chime School's new LP, The Boys Who Rain The Paisley Hotel. Pretty jangly, right?
And that's what you get throughout the second release from the San Francisco-based band. If you checked out their 2021 eponymous debut, you know what to expect--endearingly pleasant, melodic, mid-tempo, gently-strummed guitar pop that calls to mind post-distortion Teenage Fanclub and Cosmic Rough Riders and, to a lesser extent, the Feelies and the Bats and, more recently, The Boys With The Perpetual Nervousness. Plus, there's some shimmering sunshine pop shining through, giving the band a vibe pretty similar to the like-minded Bay Area band The Orange Peels (the delightful "Wandering Song" kicks off with a riff right out of the Peels' songbook before swerving into one of the album's fizzier, more upbeat numbers.)
And while they don't veer far from the sound of the debut--no unexpected pivots into synth-pop or post-punk fury here--on first spin I think it's even better, the my-what-a-nice-little-tune ratio marginally higher. Check it out on Bandcamp.
