My Top 1000 Songs #721: Girl With The Black Tights

[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]

One of my absolute favorite songs of the past decade, yet also one I'm pretty convinced nobody else has ever heard. Or maybe it's just a well-kept secret? Well, folks, here's our chance to remedy that.

Dylan In The Movies is the alter ego of singer-songwriter Brian Sullivan, a purveyor of sweet, jangly indie pop that reminds me a lot of Matt Pond PA (another singer/band deserving of a larger audience), with shades of the Lemonheads and Bright Eyes.

For "Girl With The Black Tights," off 2014's Sweet Rebel Thee, Sullivan recruited Tanya Donelly (of Belly, and before that Throwing Muses and the Breeders) to share the vocals. And it's just a stunner, a melodic gem with the pair exchanging winsome, deeply affecting vocals. One of those post-millennium tracks that makes me wish we were all still trading mixtapes just so I could share it with friends.

(Sullivan & Donelly later reunited to record a 2022 album as The Loyal Seas, which I'd totally overlooked until just this minute and I'm excited to check it out!)
