My Top 2000 Songs #1072: Lisa Smokes Pot
And while friends in the Noise Petals were working a similar groove to R.E.M. and other jangly college radio bands of the era, this one from Volatile Molecules is... ok, a little rougher around the edges. Ben X (I haven't spoken to him since graduation and not sure his musical past has followed him into adulthood, so we'll leave it at that) was a year behind me in college. Volatile Molecules was his high school band, and they recorded a home demo (circa 1985) which he shared with the college station. "Lisa Smokes Pot" sounds kinda how you'd expect a high school band demo tape from the pre-digital days to sound, but you can hear Ben's Jonathan Richman/Violent Femmes influences, and we played it all the time on the station just to mix things up.
And it's fun as all get-out, so there. Can't tell you how many times our crowd would manage to slip "Sorry, I can't talk right now, I'm soooo stoooooned" into a party conversation, and the damn thing is still bouncing around my head.
Anyway, Ben X put together a new band in college, Horton's Wrath, and they played a few parties. A tape of one of their shows streamed for awhile on Spotify but, sadly, it's no longer up there. Ah well. At least we can still enjoy Lisa!
