My Top 1000 Songs #820: Ohm
[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]
I'm a sucker for a 3-chord pop song. And, hey, if you can pull off a great song with just two chords (or thereabouts), even better.
But how many songs can ride out a single chord and still be freakin' great? Ok, fine, there's "Tomorrow Never Knows," which appeared here a million years ago. But otherwise?
Yet Yo La Tengo, an absurd quarter-century into their career--on 2013's Fade--strum away on a single chord throughout the nearly 7-minute length of "Ohm," and it still feels like they could stretch it out just a little bit longer. Some striking full-band harmonies and a spine-tingling melodic hook don't hurt, either.
Plus: Bonus points for one of the greatest videos ever--from a career surprisingly full of greatest videos ever--which is worth a million screen grabs to make sure you get a compete picture of the ultimate rock & roll mathematical equation.
