Florida band Surfer Blood make 2010s-era jangle pop music, but coat it in just enough of a distorted gauze--far from Jesus & Mary Chain territory, but from the same school of let's-take-a-nice-pop-song-and-fizz-it-up-to-grab-your-attention. "Floating Vibes," off their solid 2010 debut Astro Coast, perfectly nails the aesthetic, a catchy, offbeat indie pop song, with the gentle hooks swathed in just a touch of buzz, a bare suggestions of shoegaze out on the perimeter, one of those songs that seems feather-light yet totally burrows into my consciousness.Live in the studio:Live-ish 2020:See the entire Top 2000 to date in a sortable database!
Happy to see this pop up - as someone for whom the Strokes & Interpol were the initial gateways to a wider world of music, the surf rock/postpunk/jangle/lo-fi boom of the early 2010s was the scene I'd been waiting for my whole life, and Astro Coast is one of the high points of that era; Surfer Blood on that tour is just about the best live show I've ever seen, at least until the encore when the folks up front started crowd surfing the singer and pretty much dropped him - things wrapped up quickly after that. Also, if you're not already familar with the Captured Tracks label, I heartily recommend it - I more or less lived off their releases back then.
