2000 Great Songs #1350: I Will Follow You Into The Dark

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to love this song for its clever couplets and expressive angst, or hate it for its over-the-top sentimentality... but the bottom line is I just don't tire of hearing it. So it is what it is.

"I Will Follow You Into The Dark," the second pick off Death Cab For Cutie's 2005 major label breakthrough Plans--probably my favorite LP of theirs, though it's always in flux--is basically a Ben Gibbard solo track, just him and his solo guitar, kind of an indie rock-era "Yesterday." And one could try to write it off as maudlin high school poetry, but I think that would be selling short its thoughtfulness. So, yeah, I'm just gonna keep on throwing it onto mixes for a little while longer.
