2000 Great Songs #1355: You've Come This Way Before
Singer and 60s/70s actress Nancy Priddy (note: mom of actress Christina Applegate) recorded a lone solo album back in the day, 1968's You've Come This Way Before. I've chatted about it previously, but it's this weird little obscurity that couldn't quite decide on a mission statement: Psychedelia? Lounge pop? Relatively straight psychedelically-informed showtunes comparable to the Hair soundtrack (coincidentally referenced a couple days back)?
The title track which opens the record manages to blend all of this, psychedelic pop that's impossible to pigeonhole. I've always found it rather fascinating, too wholesome for psychedelia, too trippy for pop, maybe analogous to Nancy Sinatra on acid, haunting in a unique way.
