2000 Great Songs #1254: Try And Stop Me
The Creation's 1966 single "Try And Stop Me" (later included on 1967 debut LP We Are Paintermen) was one of those tracks that helped me realize there was other great British Invasion music beyond the better-known Beatles/Stones/Who/Kinks work. The band didn't get much play here in the US, and they escaped my attention when I was first digging into the classic rock past as a teen, but I finally stumbled across them a few years later. They got a bit more attention via various revivals (i.e. Ride's cover of "How Does It Feel To Feel," Wes Anderson's use of "Making Time" in Rushmore), but when I first heard them they definitely had the feel of unearthing a great, lost gem. Could've just as easily used "Making Time" in this slot, but something about the buoyant "Try And Stop Me" has always felt incredibly fun (at least musically; the ex-girlfriend putdown lyrics are a bit of a bummer).Video with different version:
