2000 Great Songs #1228: Animal Zoo
A few classic rock staples aside, Spirit's initial rapid-fire 4-LP run between 1968-1970 is woefully underappreciated these days, yet makes for a wildly disparate collection of enduring music ranging from pop to hard rock, trippy psychedelia to Zappa-like eclecticism. (Their nearly-as-great and equally-interesting mid-70s return is even more underappreciated.) "Animal Zoo," off 1970's ambitious, far-reaching Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus (their final record before splintering and later regrouping in various iterations), is more on the straight pop side, a mid-tempo rocker that makes for some great, light fun. But even as one of their more straightforward rockers, there's some great guitar work and amusing studio playfulness.Live 1978:Midwestern hip-hop duo S.A. Smash sampled it for 1978's Illy:
