My Top 1000 Songs #788: The Thoughts Of Emerlist Davjack

If The Nice are remembered at all these days, it's largely as the original stomping ground of Emerson Lake & Palmer's Keith Emerson, the band where he first performed bombastic 20-minute classical-music-based feats of keyboard wonkery before a couple of confederates gave him even freer reign to do so. Still, they had some interesting pre-prog psychedelic moments, most notably the title track of their 1967 debut LP (derived from the names of the band members). "The Thoughts Of Emerlist Davjack" is actually kinda ballsy, a, booming, orchestrated chorale of bah-bah-bahs with some surprisingly self-assured lyrics of youthful optimism. Not every band has the confidence to launch their career with such a deliberate anthem... usually you gotta earn that sorta thing... but that burst of gall helped launch a prog movement, so kudos to them. Ultimately, it's just a lot of fun, something that doesn't necessarily come to mind when describing the balance of the Nice/ELP oeuvre.French TV 1967:Hey, check out this cool Ukranian band called The Velvet Sun doing a nifty cover!
