My Top 1000 Songs #782: Hammond Song
[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]
Sure, the self-titled 1979 debut from sisters Maggie, Terre, and Suzzy Roche was simply lovely, their unique three-part harmonies giving an otherworldly spin to a cappella folk. But they found an unlikely partner in Robert Fripp, spending the wasteland years between King Crimson iterations producing a wide range of bands. On this (and a later record, 1982's Keep On Doing), Fripp kept a low profile, letting the women, adorned with little more than acoustic guitars and those vocals, do all the heavy lifting. But he breaks out his trademark Frippertronic guitar loops for "Hammond Song," taking its unadorned folk-pop beauty into a completely different sphere for two brief solos, before handing the reins back to the ladies. It's an unexpected pairing that's hard to forget.
(He'd do the same for Doing's "Losing True," equally great.)Live (Fripless) in 1981:Wonderful Fleet Foxes cover:Indigo Girls cover:You'll find this track among other outstanding Fripp collaborations on this Fripp mix I compiled awhile back:
