New Release: Wild Pink

Wild Pink--essentially the recording project of New York musician John Ross--have been quietly releasing dreamy indie pop records for nearly a decade. They've gotten some critical buzz, but for inexplicable reasons haven't scaled the same heights as, say, the War On Drugs, who inhabit a similar space: contemporary laid back grooves and stripped-down bedroom pop interwoven with more straightforward hooks unafraid to invoke the traditions of mellow 70s classic rock.

Their last album, 2022's ILYSM, was lovely, relying more heavily on electronica to flesh out the sound. But the new one, Dulling The Horns, reverses course, mostly replacing the synths with some shoegaze-tinged buzzsaw guitars. So you get some more bracing riff rockers, catchy hooks better suited to being cranked up in the car than kicking back on the sofa, a touch of the Vaccines or Surfer Blood thrown into the mix. The opening combo of "The Fences Of Stonehenge" and especially "Eating The Egg Whole" are surprisingly fun little rockers, as is the almost radio-ready "Sprinter Brain." Sure, you get the reliable slowed-down mellow buzz suited for kicking back, but overall the band are in perkier, fizzier electric indie rock territory here. Great stuff; find it on Bandcamp.
