My Top 1000 Songs #602: Cactus Cat

[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]

What a nice song! And aren't we all entitled to a nice song? Yes, yes we are. We are good people, and we deserve nice songs. Like this one.

Anyway, back in the late 80s, after getting my arms around the bigger acts in New Zealand's Flying Nun Records' stable (like the Clean, the Bats, and the Chills), I went casting about for other artists on the label. I picked up some music from Look Blue Go Purple and was instantly charmed by "Cactus Cat," from the band's second EP, 1986's LBGPEP2. It featured the all-girl band wielding delightful jangle pop, overflowing with endearing vocals and perky hooks, gently lo-fi and pretense-free and just utterly lovable. Like I said, it's a nice song!

(Ok, the timing is a little fortuitous, as the song is set in Tucson, AZ, where I happened to spend the past week for my kid's wedding, so that's also very nice. Also--I like cats, in videos and otherwise.)
