My Top 1000 Songs #313: Here's Where The Story Ends

[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]

Stellar 1990 single from The Sundays: "Here's Where The Story Ends" is pure Smiths jangle, but with singer Harriet Wheeler giving a far prettier and (sort of?) less downcast touch to the music. You can hear shades of folk and dream pop in the mix, somewhere between 10,000 Maniacs and the Cocteau Twins, but it gels into something both obviously indebted to predecessors but distinctive. The band's debut Reading, Writing and Arithmetic came at a time when I needed a little something ethereal, and fit the bill nicely, this song in particular ending up on every mixtape for some time afterwards. Still works well when you need the party guests to start chilling out.
