2000 Great Songs #1424: Bertha Butt Boogie

Jimmy Castor (both with and without The Jimmy Castor Bunch) released records throughout the 70s filled primarily with fairly straight soul and R&B (and some smooth jazz), but he also recorded some hugely entertaining funk music--albeit often novelty tracks with goofy lyrics. "Bertha Butt Boogie," off the Bunch's 1974 colorfully-titled Butt Of Course, obviously falls into that latter camp, but for all the silliness it's a hoot. Castor's throaty "bump bump bumpadump" vocal growl, trading off with a giddy party narrative and some silly voices and, yeah, a lot of butts, cries out as one of those instantly-dated schlocky novelty songs that dotted 70s radio; yet it's still a killer groove, pretty essential 70s funk for us dabblers.
