2000 Great Songs #1421: Nights On Broadway

As noted previously, I was never a Bee Gees fan once they got past their late 60s pop-psych era. Still, I've got a soft spot for "Nights On Broadway," from 1975's Main Course, the album which saw them start to pivot from AOR pop into soul & disco. Obviously that pivot would become complete with 1977's Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, an album which seized control of the universe (or at least every Bar/Bat Mitzvah I attended over the next few years), but here was still in its infancy.

"Broadway" (along with the same album's "Jive Talkin'") were all over the AM Top 40 stations when I first started listening to the radio as a kid. They weren't necessarily my thing, as I was far more into teen-pop-rock bands like Sweet and Kiss and the Bay City Rollers, and at 9 years old I wasn't exactly interested in music that probably worked better on the dance floor. Yet something about "Broadway" left a mark. It's got a slinky funk groove, and the verses have an air of mystery about them. Plus I'm a sucker for the segue from the minor-key verse into a rousing major-key chorus, that feeling of release that comes with a wonderfully infectious hook settling in. Not something I'm gonna spin very often, but still has that heavy nostalgia vibe.
